The analogy isn't exact. But the war in Afghanistan is starting to look disturbingly familiar.

I don't see what we're trying to do there. It seems that we're trying to rid the country of a violent religious faction that a lot of the country doesn't seem to mind that much.
Trying to weed out the Taliban from civilians is MUCH the same, I agree. Lot's of dead and in the end, they win just like when the USSR tried it.
