Barack Obama on Libya: Mission is 'focused'
Obama puts international military action on the table in remarks Friday afternoon.

President Barack Obama demanded Friday that Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi immediately stop relentless attacks against pro-democracy rebels or face the consequences of international military force (well, he hasn't yet Mr. Pres. - so what are you gona do about it?), but he insisted that U.S. commitment to a "focused," mission to ward off a humanitarian crisis wouldn't include American ground troops.

In stark, personal language that echoed a previous president's warnings to Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein, Obama suggested the Pentagon would use air and naval assets in a possible fight in Libya. While he repeated his declaration that Qadhafi "must go," the president stopped short of advocating an all-out regime change, and outlined American regional interests in justifying the use of military force.

"Here's why this matters to us: left unchecked, we have every reason to believe that Qadhafi would commit atrocities against his people.(( NO! your kidding Bary! )) Many thousands could die. A humanitarian crisis could ensue," said the grim-faced president, who delivered his brief remarks in the East Room on Friday. Such a crisis, he added, could further destabilize an already volatile, dangerous region. [[ You don't say! ]]
Obama also articulated [[able to speak ]] two immediate goals for the mission: protecting "innocent civilians in Libya" and holding Qadhafi accountable for human rights violations, including the killing of unarmed civilians. A third longer-term objective, he said, was ensuring that stern warnings for leaders to stop wholesale, unjust violence against their people won't "ring hollow" in the future.

The president stressed that the U.S., while taking a leadership role, was part of a broad coalition that included the enthusiastic participation of France, Britain and the Arab League. The democracy people have demanded in the region — a prelude to the uprising in Libyan uprising — "cannot and will not be imposed by the United States."
There he goes again, was that for Gaddafi's benefit our 'ours'?
Obama's brief address came a day after a United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing the use of force against pro-Qadhafi forces — and hours after rebel groups disputed the dictator's claim he had imposed an immediate ceasefire and withdrawn the troops who have routed poorly-armed rebel forces in recent days.
About halfway through his remarks, Obama metaphorically drew a line in the Libyan sand, [[ YEW! he's good @ metaphors]] declaring he wouldn't commit ground forces to the action at a time when the administration is trying to disengage the Pentagon [[where'd that come from?]] from two bloody, costly wars nearby. The U.N. resolution passed Thursday authorizes a no-fly zone along with "any and all" action to quell the bloodshed, but stops short of sanctioning an invasion of Libya. [[ BET ME!!!]]"
The United States is not going to deploy ground troops into Libya. And we are not going to use force to go beyond a well-defined goal," he said.
