Here's an interesting read, important and verifiable information :

About 6 months ago, the writer was watching a news program on oil and
one of the Forbes Bros. was the guest. The host said to Forbes, "I am going to
ask you a direct question and I would like a direct answer; how much oil
does the U.S. have in the ground?" Forbes did not miss a beat, he said, "more
than all the Middle East put together." Please read below.

The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April 2008 that only
scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a
revised report (hadn't been updated since 1995) on how much oil was in
this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota, western South Dakota, and

The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska's Prudhoe
Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign
oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion
barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel,
we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5..3 trillion.

"When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see
their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.." says Terry Johnson, the Montana
Legislature's financial analyst.

"This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found
in the past 56 years," reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a
formation known as the Williston Basin, but is more commonly referred to as the
'Bakken.' It stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and
into Canada.. For years, U. S. oil exploration has been considered a dead
end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells
decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up
the Bakken's massive reserves.... and we now have access of up to 500
billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels
will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 2041 years
straight. And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one
should - because it's from 2006!

largest untapped oil reserve in the world. It is more than 2 TRILLION
barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush mandated its extraction. In

motherload of oil why are we still fighting over off-shore drilling?

They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders,
than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the official estimates:

- 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia

- 18-times as much oil as Iraq

- 21-times as much oil as Kuwait

- 22-times as much oil as Iran

- 500-times as much oil as Yemen

- and it's all right here in the Western United States .

HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the
environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America
become independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group of
people dictate our lives and our economy.....WHY?

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in
this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION
barrels untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in
the world today, reports The Denver Post.

Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think
again!
It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to. Think OPEC just
might be funding the environmentalists?

Are you going for the World Domination theory?  Well, there's some validity to that.  Name some other countries who have military bases all across the globe... a situation comes up, the US gets involved, then at the end of things, "we will be needed for an undetermined amount of time, so we have to build a base there (fill in the blank)".  As it stands, the US has the ability to launch a well-rounded attack because of all these bases hither and yon.

As to the oil reserves, though - yeah, there may be more oil here, but at what cost to the planet?  Should we just keep destroying it because we can, because we are too lazy to implement the use of clean energy?  How will oil help us when the air is too acidic to breathe?

Why are enviromentalists getting painted as kooks so much lately? Do we REALLY want to destroy a species just so mama can put gas in her Expedition or so Papa can fire up his army of off road machines? There ARE safe places to drill here but maybe the Rockies area contains a fragile ecosystem. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. We can and should make intellignt decisions devoid of any of the BS common to todays political talk shows.

Terry, during the oil boom in the eighties, oil was being pumped out of the Anadarko oil basin and then poured out because the government said the producers could only produce SO MUCH. This is NOT just a bunch of liberal, tree huggers. Politics and bottom lines are not-so-strange bedfellows in there too.

We're so spoiled on government subsidized oil that while the rest of the world was building and/or buying economical cars WE were still building fuel guzzling behemoths like the faux-Hummer JUST so dad can drive a four wheeled phallic statement.

Independent of foreign oil?  Let's think big and be independent of oil itself.  Other countries are far far ahead of us on clean technology.  Don't worry - they will sell us the means of production.

We are pitiful.

Shale extraction is messy and uses lots of water, and water is more important than oil.  I MIGHT be interested in some limited extractions to hold us over until we switch to new clean stuff, but we are doing nothing about getting to new clean stuff so I say Hell no, you can't.  Keep your filthy money-grubbing hands off of my planet.

We should have instituted gas rationing on 9/12.  But, we were told to get in the gas-guzzler and shop shop shop with our credit cards and equity accounts, so here we are.

Now that was several different ideas 'i' agree, but what about the millions & billions we're spending overseas when "WE" got all "WE" need here in the "US", doesn't there seem to be something wrong with this scenario?

Oil is sold on the world market and oil companies have no patriotism.

So unless the US nationalizes the oil production and distribution, there will be no 16 bucks a barrel oil from anywhere, much less here.

And if true, it would be wise to preserve our own reserves and use up the rest of the worlds oil first.(nothing sucks worse than the batteries running out on your electric tank or bomber)

Petroleum is going to be needed for a long time into the future. Electricity can only do so much, for now.

Oil companies continue to lie to people (Jam, I think you were going this direction) because they say there is a shortage of oil.  There is not a shortage of oil, there is a lack of refining.  That is how the oil companies hold us hostage...they would rather dump bucketloads of oil than refine it, because if they refine it they will have to sell it for less.  They bemoan a lack of refinement capacities while they have crowed about hand over fist profits....and then they moan some more about not being able to refine the oil they have because it costs them so much to build the refineries.  See the game? :mad:

As I see it (and call me crass, like I will care), the only way we are going to successfully and permanently make the switch to clean energy is we will have to wait for the politicians with oil interests up their butts die off.

WMW, I would say that yes, petroleum will continue to have a place, but I would also maintain we have yet to pursue the limits of electricity, wind, solar, etc.  Technology exists right now that generates ocean waters into electricity AND through desalination processes, clean drinking water that can be used for humans, livestock, irrigation - but we aren't using it because we are held hostage by oil.  They are telling us it is easier to just buy their product and our politicians are too damned lazy to refuse it.

I got into a brief bout of verbal fisticuffs the other day with a complete (and obviously Republican) stranger the other day because I heard him deriding our gubernatorial candidate, Jeri Askins, on her clean energy platform.  "We've got oil to take care of that stuff!", he said.  "So, you're content with continuing to fight other people's wars, keeping the US in debt and destroying our planet, then?"  I asked.  I do believe I saw the lightbulb glowing dimly, but I'm not sure. ::)

WMW is correct - we should use up their oil first.  Any "independence" we got would last for about 20 minutes at our rate of waste, ESPECIALLY if it was "cheap." 

I'm not willing to do a darn thing about anything we may have until we change our wasteful ways and until we have  a rationing/no toys policy.

I don't understand why we are not the leaders in "green" technology.  We should be blowing everyone out of the water with innovations and equipment.

well, it's not my attitude. Litter does not yet affect me personally, however, i despise littering. I am not able to rush out and buy the newest hybrid car, but i try to think about my driving habits and try to change what i can. I was all over the recycle issue... No - not perfect - i WISH i left no carbon footprint but i can only do what i can do...

I did not say I wasn't willing to do anything!  I said I am not willing to drill until we stop throwing the stuff away with both hands.

I am not willing to destroy pristine wilderness and habitat etc etc for baggies and saran wrap and petroleum-operated toys.
